Lutopia - Chapter 2

Lui has made some insightful, clarifying comments on my first post about Lutopia. I'll post a link to these when he posts them on his blog.

Update: We have decided that Lutopia was formed originally as a new country, with only a few loyal supporters of the new order around here, as the SBS World Guide deems it, and then expanded as greater numbers of people warmed to the idea once they saw the obvious advantages this country was experiencing. Still, it was no small effort for Lutopia to become that way, let me assure you. The History of Lutopia will reveal more once I get around to penning it.

Economy
Lutopia began as medium sized country, positioned somewhere in central Europe, and was run modestly, but suprisingly competently by a select few, with the substantial input of the majority of the population, just keep things in check. Lutopia is fully independent, in fact, being rich in energy, mineral and biological resources meant that it was highly sought after as a country to conquer. But its free trade and multilateral links to the unconverted meant that it was free from threat. Nevertheless, it did have a damn good defense system (no WOMD however, that's so 2004), just in case anyone tried anything funny.

The fascinating thing about Lutopia is its people, all of which are highly educated, even down to the ones who just wanted to be labourers. Because that was their choice you see. Hence, the goods that were produced by workers working for the benefit of their country were of very high quality and competively priced. For this, Lutopians were given a basic salary, with all the trimmings.

Rich as Lutopia was, there wasn't national debt to contend with. Lutopians did feel obliged to help other countries in need, and although no debt repayment was expected in the traditional sense, however, Lutopia did expect those to return the generosity in the form of skilled labour and other mutually beneficial offerings.

Lutopia experiences some transitional unemployment as workers move from job to job, in search of broadening their skill base. But that is all. Long term unemployment has been eradicated. The employed are evenly split amongst industry, agriculture and services. Lutopia has a competitive advantage in all these sectors. Jealous?
